As the new year replaces the old, everyday is a brand-new day. With the coming of the Chinese New Year, the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest, Romania held a series of Spring Festival activities from January 20th to 27th at the Confucius Classroom at Elena Cuza National College in Craiova (hereinafter referred to as Craiova Confucius Classroom).

The first activity was group presentations by students of all grades on the Chinese New Year culture. The topics included the origin of the Chinese New Year, the grand dinner on the New Year's Eve, the Chinese New Year customs and the lively dragon and lion dances. The Chinese teachers assigned the topics to students a week ahead for them to gather information and prepare posters and slides. Through careful research and concise reports, they obtained a comprehensive understanding of the various customs of the Chinese New Year and the cultural meanings behind them.

The second activity was students of all grades making Jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) and frying spring rolls as organized by the Chinese teachers. The students in the Craiova Confucius Classroom have already been very familiar to Jiaozi-making, and this time in addition to poached Jiaozi, they also made pan-fried Jiaozi and deep-fried spring rolls. Making and frying the spring rolls means “welcoming the spring season and rolling the happiness in”, wishing that as the new year renews everything, all the students grow and develops bloomingly.

The third activity was multi-colored drawing of the lucky rabbits. This activity was mainly attended by students from Grade 0, 1, and 2. The students gathered together and drew pictures of “lucky and auspicious rabbits coming”. This activity not only practiced the students' drawing skills, but also fully demonstrated the innocence and delights of the children of the Craiova Confucius Classroom.

Activity 4 was students wishing and praying for peace and happiness in traditional Chinese clothing. They wore Qipao(cheongsam) and Hanfu (traditional Chinese suits) and appreciated the hand-embroidered round fan with rabbit designs. It was worth mentioning that part of the supplies for this activity was donated by Linyi City, the hometown of the Chinese teacher Wang Diya. This activity provided students with an opportunity to present and showcase themselves and their personalities, enriching their imagination for the Chinese traditional costumes and the embroidered crafts.

This series of Spring Festival activities fully tapped the potential of students of the Craiova Confucius Classroom, comprehensively showcased the development of their various personalities from many aspects, and effectively enhanced their understanding of the Chinese culture. In the days to come, we look forward to the greater progress of Chinese teaching of the Craiova Confucius Classroom.
